A new Great Walk through Paparoa National Park will be a memorial to the 29 men who died in the Pike River mine disaster on 19 November 2010.

The Paparoa Track is New Zealand’s 10th Great Walk. It was chosen by the families of the Pike River men as a memorial that will bring lasting benefit to the West Coast region.

The Pike River Mine site and surrounding area is part of the Paparoa National Park. The Paparoa Track will link to the mine site via the Pike29 Memorial Track, which will be opened after the Pike River Recovery Agency has completed the re-entry and recovery, and rehabilitated the area.

The men will also be remembered through an information centre to be developed at the Pike River mine amenities area, where displays and memorabilia will tell the story of the mine and disaster.

A memorial will be developed at the mine portal as a place for quiet reflection on the 29 lives lost in the mine tragedy.
