Emergency Exercise Only
Media release # 3
11.30am, Friday 8 March
Due to this morning’s seismic event on the West Coast, an incident has occurred at the Pike River Mine.
The Agency has made contact with the six men stuck underground on the inward side of the Hawera fault at the end of the drift, who are alive but two are injured.
One man has a suspected spinal injury, and the other a suspected broken leg.
The men are putting together their portable refuge chamber underground.
Methane levels in the mine are rising slowly due to ruptures in the ventilation system.
A weather window means a helicopter will fly compressors up the hill to assist with reinstating ventilation.
The Agency is gathering equipment to assist with the rescue.
We are providing updates on our website and to media as they come to hand.
